POSSCA gives instruments to school music programs
We held our annual musical instrument give away in April. 32 instruments and handed over – 24 new and 8 refurbished – free-of-charge to music educators in the Olympia, North Thurston and Tumwater public school districts. The teachers offer these instruments as loaners to students whose families cannot afford to rent or buy an instrument.
Alan Fuller is the program lead for POSSCA’s Cultural Assistance Program for Students (CAPS).
“An instrument is the ticket into a band or orchestra program. Without it, kids often have to pass on an area of study that means a great deal to them. I see firsthand how this program calls out the talent and creativity in students whose options to explore music are extremely limited.”
Red tape free zone
Fuller says CAPS works so well because the instruments go directly to the teachers. “These are front line people – music educators know who needs a loaner. They hand the instruments over quietly, so the kids never feel singled-out because their families don’t have the money.”
Since 1994, POSSCA’s CAPS program has gifted area schools with more than 300 instruments and brightened the musical futures of hundreds of young talents.
Public-private partnership supports music education
CAPS is an innovative partnership between POSSCA and the seven Rotary Clubs of Thurston County. Our Rotary partners make a yearly cash donation that provides vital financial support for CAPS.
Music 6000, Yenney Music, Westside Music Center and South Sound Music Center act as yearlong collection points for used instruments. Fuller picks them up as they come in and bids out the repair work to local refurbishers. Any remaining dollars go to the purchase of new or nearly-new instruments.
