2008 POSSCA Scholarship Winners
Six talented high school seniors receive a vital financial boost to continue their arts education in college thanks to POSSCA scholarships.
Five of the scholarship winners received $1,200 in the categories of visual art and design, literature, musical performance and drama. Adjudicators also awarded one student the $1,750 Timmerman Merit Award for outstanding achievement.
High Bar for Success
Competition this year was intense – we received over 30 applications from college-bound high school seniors across Thurston County.
Winning a POSSCA scholarship comes with a high bar for success. Students have to produce work or perform, write a detailed and articulate application, provide letters of recommendation and teacher evaluations, answer questions during a panel interview and then perform for a group of judges.
Local artists and community leaders with an arts background make up our adjudication panels.
Karen Naughton leads the POSSCA scholarship program. “The kids work really hard for these scholarships. Standards are high and the pressure is on during adjudication. The whole idea is to support and promote the students who are serious about continuing their education in the arts at the college level.”
The 2008 scholarship winners were honored at a special ceremony in June.
